For a Medicare rebate, book a longer appointment with your GP and ask about a mental health treatment plan. To start sooner, book privately with us. No referral is needed for that.
Mostly listening and questions. What has been happening, how long for, what you have already tried, and what you would like to be different. You will not be asked to relive anything you are not ready to talk about.
You and your psychologist agree on what to focus on, roughly how many sessions that might take, and how often to meet. That gets reviewed as you go rather than fixed at the start.
Yes, with limits that every psychologist has, and you deserve to know them before your first session rather than after.
Information may be shared without your consent if there is a serious risk to your safety or someone else’s, where there is a legal obligation such as mandatory reporting of risk to a child, or if records are subpoenaed by a court. If you are using a Medicare mental health treatment plan, your psychologist writes brief progress letters to your referring GP. Outside of those situations, what you say stays in the room. Your psychologist will go through this properly at the start.
